مانسون پدیده ای است طبیعی که گویا نشانه ای از افراط گرایی ای که نه تنها جزیی از فرهنگ مردمان آن گوشه از جهان ( منظور نواحی ای است که در آن ها پدیده طبیعی مانسون اتفاق می افتد ) ، که جزیی جدا نشدنی از طبیعت جغرافیایی آن نیز می باشد . جنگ های داخلی ، در گیری های قومی و قبیله ای ، حوادث طبیعی ویرانگر از این دست و ... همه و همه دست به دست هم داده اند تا وسیله ای مانند این چرخ خیاطی فرسوده ؛ که عمدتا برای دوخت و دور منسوجات پوششی از گردن به پایین مورد استفاده قرار می گیرد ، ارزشی همسنگ و حتی بالاتر از گردن برای صاحب آن پیدا کند .

The Ugandan child's hand, in contrast with that of the missionary, looks like the claw of an emaciated bird or something found on an archaeological site. This picture juxtaposes famine and the affluent West, even if the background hand is that of a well-meaning missionary who has contributed himself willingly. Ugandan and other African famines have been heavily reported in the Western press. There are many pictures of the dead, which raise questions about how the people died and how quickly they decay - on the practicalities of famine, that is to say. Texts on the question of Africa almost always raise intractable moral issues regarding the rights and wrongs of intervention. A picture such as this, which is more emblematic than explanatory, encapsulates the texts, capturing above all their element of guilt and self?accusation and the meaning or that well-fed and tended supporting hand.

A group of nomads in the desert near Qandahar face west towards Mecca to offer the fourth of five daily Muslim prayers. This picture was published in October 1993 in 'Afghanistan's Uneasy Peace" an article prepared by Steve Mc Curry and the writer Richard Mackenzie for National Geographic. Mc Curry is a specialist in Afghan geography and history and at the time this article was published had made seventeen trips to the country. He is known for his book Monsoon (1986), which focuses on weather, society and agriculture in Southeast Asia. He has worked for National Geographic since the early 1980s, principally in areas (such as the Philippines and Sri Lanka) affected by social unrest. Part-reporter and part?
documentarist, his surveys take into account topography. culture. tradition and news as it unfolds. In this moment in the desert he establishes the religions. background to Afghanistan's turbulent recent history. صحرا نوردان در بياباني در نزديكي هاي شهر قندهار به سمت غرب رو به خانه ي كعبه به نماز ايستاده اند تا بجا بياورند چهارمين نماز از نمازهاي پنج گانه ي مسلمانان را . اين عكس در اكتبر 1993 به همراه مقاله اي با نام افغانستان ، نگران صلح و آرامش در نشريه ي نشنال جئوگرافيك توسط استيو مك كاري وبه قلم ريچارد مكنزي منتشر گرديد . مك كاري كه تاريخ شناس و جغرافي دان افغانستان است ، زماني اين مقاله را به رشته تحرير در آورد كه هفدهمين سفرش را به كشور افغانستان تجربه مي كرد . وي شهرتش را با انتشار كتابي با نام مانسون ( نام باران هايي تند و شديد كه در نواحي شبه قاره هندوستان مي بارند ) و با موضوع تاثير شرايط جوي بر اوضاع اجتماعي و كشاورزي در جنوب شرقي آسيا در سال 1986 بدست آورد . او از سال 1980 با نشريه ي نشنال جئوگرافيك همكاري كرده و تحقيقاتش را اساسا بر مناطق جغرافيايي تحت تاثير مشكلات و معضلات اجتماعي ( مناطقي مانند فيليپين و سريلانكا ) متمركز كرده . مستندات و تحقيقات ، نقشه برداري ها ، بوم شناسي ها و سنت يابي هاي او ، همه و همه حاكي از حقايقي است كه در آن لحظه خاص با به تصوير كشدن آن سعي در بيان آن دارد . اين تصوير مي تواند پيش زمينه ي مناسبي براي معرفي بعد مذهبي و نيز همچنين تاريخ گذشته بر جنگ هاي داخلي آن كشور را بر بيننده ارائه كند .
